Christine Blasey Ford, the doctor and professor who accused Brett Kavanaugh of sexual assault, is pushing the FBI to investigate her claims.
Her insistence that the FBI make a thorough investigation before she testifies in front of the Senate Judiciary Committee comes only hours after the decision was made to hold a hearing this coming Monday in which both Kavanaugh and Blasey Ford would both testify.
While her decision does provoke some concern — after all, how likely are Republicans to renegotiate a hearing they never wanted to happen in the first place — her history and her character lead us to believe that she is a careful woman who would like to have all the winning cards in hand before she even arrives to the contest.
Most significantly, she has already released the notes her personal therapist took down when she described her encounter in a couple’s therapy session with her husband in 2012, a move which is virtually unprecedented in a case like this.
Furthermore, she also willingly submitted to a polygraph test performed by a former FBI agent which indicated that she was indeed telling the truth.
Blasey Ford’s lawyer’s letter to Senate Judiciary Chairman Chuck Grassley requesting an investigation also suggests a careful strategy:
“A full investigation by law enforcement officials will ensure that the crucial facts and witnesses in this matter are assessed in a non-partisan manner, and that the Committee is fully informed before conducting any hearing or making any decisions.”
Senate Republicans led by the hypocrite-of-all-hypocrites Mitch McConnell have fought relentlessly to fast-track Kavanaugh’s confirmation, and in light of certain comments made by senators dismissing the allegations, it is likely that if the Senate Judiciary Committee were to hear Blasey Ford’s testimony alone, it would be similarly dismissed.
But, if her lawyers can convince the FBI to open a formal investigation into the matter — and if there is a shred of justice remaining in our government — there is hope that the Republicans will be forced to delay Kavanaugh’s confirmation until the investigation has been completed.
And considering all the evidence weighing in Blasey Ford’s favor thus far, it is very likely that that investigation, if handled appropriately, will be the proverbial nail in Kavanaugh’s confirmational coffin.
Iron Triangle Press will continue to follow Blasey Ford’s story.
