Republican Senators announced Thursday that they would be willing to allow the president to fire Attorney General Jeff Sessions.
First, the president told Fox News that if he had known his attorney general would recuse himself from Robert Mueller’s investigation that he never would have hired him to begin with.
Then, Senator Lindsey Graham (R-SC) told reporters that soon “it will be time to have a new face and a fresh voice at the Department of Justice,” adding that Sessions clearly “doesn’t have the confidence of the president.”
“And I think there will come a time, sooner rather than later, where it will be time to have a new face and a fresh voice at the Department of Justice. Clearly, Attorney General Sessions doesn’t have the confidence of the president. … And the president has a right to have an attorney general he feels comfortable with.” — Graham
Senator Charles Grassley (R-IA), who is the Senate Judiciary Committee chair, told Bloomberg News that he would be able to schedule time for hearings for a new attorney general as soon as this fall.
