“Silent Sam” Toppled by Students

University of North Carolina students toppled the Confederate “Silent Sam” statue on the eve of the new school year.

The statue was erected in 1913 in honor of Confederate soldiers and has been the repeated subject of protests, demonstrations, and other actions.

Doctoral candidate Maya Little is currently facing charges of property destruction and potential expulsion from the university following her protest in which she poured red ink and her own blood on the statue this past April.
