This time the president attacked Iranian President Rouhani in an unhinged, sophomoric Twitter rant.
It has only been two months since the United States reneged on its commitment to the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), more commonly known as the Iran Nuclear Deal, and already our president has resorted to attacking the Iranian leader via his favorite social media platform.
While the ridiculousness of a U.S. president writing in all caps like an angry child may be amusing, this is a very dangerous statement.
To threaten a country like Iran with “consequences the like of which few throughout history have ever suffered before” is no small decision.
This incident began after Secretary of State Mike Pompeo compared the leaders of Iran to mobsters and con-men during a speech given in California.
In response, President Rouhani warned the United States government against any hostile action against his country, saying, “War with Iran is the mother of all wars.”
After Trump’s bombastic comments, Rouhani again issued a cautionary warning:
“Mr. Trump, don’t play with the lion’s tail. This would only lead to regret. You will forever regret it.”
As the European Union scrambles to save what remains of the JCPOA and to maintain its economic relations with Iran as well as to prevent any further nuclear development, it appears that our president has just thrown a rather nasty stick into the spokes of their plan.
Iron Triangle Press will continue to follow this story as it develops.
