A Time of Mourning

A 30-year old man has been arrested on suspicion of murdering a 3-year-old Ethiopian refugee during her birthday party in Boise, Idaho.

The toddler was reportedly stabbed Saturday at her birthday party and succumbed to her wounds yesterday.

Eight other people, six of whom are children between the ages of 3 and 12, were also injured in the mass stabbing with all but one of the victims still in the hospital.

The International Rescue Committee has identified the child as Ruya Kadir and says that she came to the U.S. in 2015 with her mother. Her father remains in Turkey.

Almost all of the victims were refugees from Syria, Iraq, and Ethiopia.

“Our city has long stood as a welcoming city – a place of safety and kindness for those fleeing violence and oppression in their homelands. The senseless acts of one disturbed person does not change that. As Boiseans, we come together not only to condemn this vile act, but also to embrace those among us seeking refuge from tyranny, suffering and war. It is who we are and who we will continue to be.”  — Boise Mayor Dave Bieter

Authorities airlifted the girl to Salt Lake City for treatment, but she succumbed to her wounds.

Police claim that there is no evidence to suggest that this heinous act was a hate crime.

According to Police Chief William Bones, the suspect has “an extensive criminal record spanning multiple states, who has spent time in prison and whose past criminal violations do include violence against others.”
