Empty Shoes

Residents of Puerto Rico placed hundreds of pairs of shoes outside the Capitol building in San Juan on Friday to symbolize and honor the nearly 5,000 people who died as a result of Hurricane Maria.

A study released by Harvard last week shows that the death toll following the record-breaking hurricane last year is at least 70 times higher than the official count at 4,645 dead.

The government’s official count remains at just 64.
