The Senate Intelligence Committee has voted 10-5 to recommend Gina Haspel’s nomination to the full Senate today.
UPDATED 05/17/18 10:09 PM PST: The full senate confirmed Haspel as the first woman to direct the CIA today with a 54-45 majority thanks to a handful of Democrats.
Led by Senator Mark Warner (D-VA), they cited her tenure and experience as sufficient qualification.
Haspel wrote the following statement to Senator Mark Warner (D-VA), which apparently swayed him enough to decide to support her confirmation:
“With the benefit of hindsight and my experience as a senior agency leader, the enhanced interrogation program is not one the CIA should have undertaken.”
Warner’s change of heart seems to have inspired other Democrats to change their vote, as well.
The following democratic senators have chosen to support Haspel or are likely to do so:
- *Sen. Joe Manchin (West Virginia)
- Sen. Joe Donnelly (Indiana)
- *Sen. Mark Warner (Virginia)
- Sen. Heidi Heitkamp (North Dakota)
- Sen. Bill Nelson (Florida)
- *These senators are members of the Senate Intelligence Committee
Warner wrote the following in explanation of his support for Haspel:
“I believe she is someone who can and will stand up to the President if ordered to do something illegal or immoral — like a return to torture.”
Haspel could be confirmed as soon as tomorrow if senators cooperate in waiving procedure to accommodate an early vote.
On the heels of our country’s shameful decision to ignite further hostility and violence in the Middle East by moving our embassy to Jerusalem, confirming Haspel would just be further proof that the U.S. under the current administration cannot be trusted.
